Ivanovo is a city in central Russia, the administrative center of the Ivanovo region. It was founded by merging of two settlements in 1871. The first one was Ivanovo village (a flax-processing center), the second one - Voznesensky Posad (an industrial center). The city is located in the interfluve of two large Russian rivers - Klyazma and Volga. Until 1932 it was called Ivanovo-Voznesensk. Ivanovo is a historical center for the production of fabrics.

In the XVII century textile manufactories appeared in Ivanovo. In the XVIII century in Ivanovo there is a cotton production. Cotton, worsted and silk goods and clothing were produced in Ivanovo. Linen and printed fabrics were in great demand both in Russia and abroad. In the XIX century, textile production was represented by large factories equipped with the latest equipment.

At one time, Ivanovo claimed to be the world capital of light industry. Therefore, "cotton edge" and was included in the list of cities of the Golden Ring of Russia. Ivanovo is the youngest city in the Golden Ring of Russia. In addition to the 'the land of printed cotton', Ivanovo is also called 'the textile capital of Russia' and 'the city of brides'.

Ivanovo is one of the centers of constructivism, an architectural style that was widespread in the 1920s and 30s. The city in Central Russia is second only to Moscow and St. Petersburg (the-ship-house, the-horseshoe-house) by the number of monuments of this period.

The Ivanovo region is rich in cultural and artistic traditions. One of the main tourist centers of the Ivanovo region is the town Plyos, located on the right-bank hills of the Volga, at the mouth of the Shokhonka River. The ancient villages of Palekh and Kholui are famous for their lacquer miniatures and the school of icon painting. Shuya is famous for churches, monasteries and monuments of park sculpture. The town Yuryevets is the birthplace of the famous Soviet film director A. Tarkovsky. House-museum of Andrey Tarkovsky was opened there. The Zerkalo (Mirror) International Film Festival was named after Andrei Tarkovsky and has taken place in his native Ivanovo Region every year since 2007.

 

The City of Students

Together with the "titles" of the Textile Region and the City of Brides, Ivanovo is considered a city of students. There are 10 higher education institutions in the city, where about 30 thousand students are trained. Several years in a row Ivanovo reached the final of the contest for the title of the "Youth Capital of Europe". In 2018, the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Ivanovo-Voznesensk Polytechnic Institute is celebrated, on the basis of which ISUCT was founded in 1930.
